Waverley Studio College moves from Special Measures to a ‘Good’ School
Ofsted Jan 2017
The school has been on a remarkable journey and has transformed within less the two years. It was judged as inadequate in May 2015 and has been rated as a “Good” school following an Ofsted inspection in Jan 2017. The report found the school is rapidly improving under “strong” leadership and a “clear vision of excellence.”
The report comments on the “effective procedures” in place to assure the quality of teaching, learning and assessment have resulted in significant improvements to the quality of provision, the impact of which can be seen in the “strong and sustained improvements to pupils’ achievement.”
The inspectors mentioned, the improvements were to all areas of the school which have resulted in a “growing positive reputation for the school.”
The school was described as a place where “there is a very strong sense of community among staff, including leaders, teachers and support staff, and all are pulling in the same direction to improve pupil outcomes. “
On student behaviour, the inspectors concluded “behaviour of pupils is good” and “attendance has been sustained above the national average since September 2015 and continues to improve.” As well as safeguarding in the school being “effective.”
Relationships between students and teachers were highly productive. The report added, “pupils behave very well around the school and in lessons. They show respect for each other, for staff and for visitors. They value their school and the support it provides for them.”
Inspectors commented that “pupils wear their uniforms with pride and talk with feeling about how they want to live up to the high expectations that staff have of their behaviour and what they can achieve.”
On teaching, learning and assessment stated “teachers created calm and productive learning environments that motivate pupils to learn well and make rapid progress.’ They commented that teachers have good subject knowledge and use this well to design engaging learning activities.
Leaders monitor and ensure that teachers’ marking and feedback follow school policy consistently and effectively. “This is enabling them to make more rapid progress.”
The inspectors commented on the “the rapid rate of improvement in pupils’ progress at key stage 4, and is being sustained over time.” Achievement in the sixth form has been consistently above national, and inspectors commented “students consistently attain the highest possible grades.” This is supported by the DfE 16- 18 performance tables, which shows Waverley Studio College are in the top 4% of the schools nationally.
